Rain had turned Pier Street black when Gabriel Vale, owner of the Nightjar Cafe, was found dead in his back office. His final order was a plain double espresso.
The cup contained hazelnut protein despite the cafe being strictly nut-free because of Gabriel's severe allergy. The espresso waited unattended at the service station for five minutes. Several people had grudges. Only one had both the means and the opportunity.
